Today along with many other communities worldwide Dumfries commemorated the lives of the 1500 odd souls who perished on the Titanic. Two young men from this town aged 20 and 21 died at their posts.

Thomas Mullen was a Steward and was in the same class at school as his ship mate who had recomemded to him a life at sea.

Jock Hume was a violinist in a small band of seven who as the ship was sinking started playing in the First class section of the ship before moving to the Second class and subsequently on to the deck. They continued playing until the ship slipped under the water.Today the band in Dumfries played the hymn "Nearer my God to Thee" which was played on the ship at the end, as wreaths were laid on the Memorial today in the Dock Park. This is my tribute to them.

"Many brave things were done that night but none more brave than by those few men playing minute after minute as the ship settled quietly lower and lower in the sea...the music they played serving alike as their own immortal requiem and their right to be recorded on the rulls of undying fame."
-Lawrence Beesley, Titanic Survivor
