I used to get load of calls and no-one was there, it was very annoying as Corey was still a tiny baby.

I thought it was someone being an idiot so rang b.t. and they said it was a call centre that automatically dials number but they don't have enough operators to take all the calls.

With Telephone Preference now, only get occasional nonsense now :D

Thanks Abzzeus for link, had a wee look but this is mainly American based data and seems of limited use to us here in UK.

OK Tracey on strange calls, the info you were given is totally correct, if you can imagine someone being employed to ring lots numbers one at a time, it might be 12+ or more before you might get someone to answer especially during the day, and is a total waste of time money and resources.
Therefore they arrange to call say maybe 30 numbers at one time and hopefully one call will be answered, they then speak to that number and drop all the other calls that are still ringing. Hence your phone rings for a short time and stops or no one speaks as they are speaking to the other number.
The moral is do not answer your telephone right away but as you say the telephone preference scheme works as does BT privacy system and you get free caller display thrown in for free.

Hope this post works tried posting about 40 mins ago and puter locked up.

Following on from John here, its also worth remembering if you are one of those to answer the phone and speak to a human. If your not interested, tell them so but don't you end the call, by putting the phone down, if you hang up the call before the caller gets to her/his "end call screen" - you will go straight back into the dialler and get called again.
